2026 Social Security Disability Payment Calendar

2026 Social Security Disability Payment Calendar: Exact SSDI & SSI Dates and COLA Guide

Understanding when your Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments will arrive is crucial for managing your finances. The Social Security Administration (SSA) has a yearly schedule, and the 2026 payment calendar is now available.

This guide shares the full 2026 payment schedule, explains how the SSA sets your payment date based on your benefit type, and highlights key updates, including the new Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) and updated work limits.

How the 2026 Social Security Payment Calendar Works

The SSA uses a system of four primary pay cycles. Your specific payment date is determined by the type of benefit you receive and the day of the month you were born.

For Supplemental Security Income (SSI) Recipients

If you receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI), your payment is generally issued on the 1st of the month.

  • The Weekend/Holiday Exception: If the 1st of the month falls on a weekend or a federal holiday, your payment will be made on the business day immediately preceding the 1st. This is a critical rule (see table below), as it often results in two payments in a single calendar month (and zero payments in the following month).
  • Rule for SSI: If the 1st is a Saturday, Sunday, or Federal Holiday → Payment is delivered on the preceding business day.

For SSDI, Retirement, and Survivors Benefits (New Claimants)

This payment schedule applies to:

Birth Date Range  Payment Day

1st – 10th

The Second Wednesday of the month.

11th – 20th

The Third Wednesday of the month.

21st – 31st

The Fourth Wednesday of the month.

For Payments on the 3rd of the Month (Legacy & Concurrent Recipients)

Your Social Security payment is issued on the 3rd of the month (or the preceding business day if the 3rd is a weekend or holiday) if one of the following is true:

  • You started receiving Social Security benefits (SSDI, Retirement, etc.) before May 1997.
  • You receive both SSI and Social Security (known as Concurrent Benefits). In this case, your SSI benefit is on the 1st, and your SSDI/Social Security benefit is on the 3rd.

Key Changes and New Limits for 2026

The most significant changes for all beneficiaries in 2026 are the annual Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) and updated work limits for disability programs.

Guidance for Claimants and Recipients

If you are a claimant or recipient of disability benefits, budgeting and tracking your income are paramount.

Concurrent Benefits (SSDI, VA, Workers’ Comp)

If you receive other benefits alongside your Social Security Disability payment, keep the following in mind:

  • SSDI and VA Benefits: The SSA payment schedule governs your SSDI payment. The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has its own payment schedule (usually the 1st of the month). Your SSDI and VA payments will follow their respective schedules. Note: VA disability compensation does not typically offset SSDI benefits, but the rules are complex regarding military retirement pay and VA compensation.

  • SSDI and Workers’ Compensation (Workers’ Comp): Unlike VA benefits, Workers’ Comp benefits can reduce your SSDI payment (the “offset”). Your payment date is governed by the SSA schedule, but the payment amount may be reduced based on your Workers’ Comp benefit.

If Your Payment is Delayed or Missing

A delay in your direct deposit can cause financial stress.

  1. Wait 3 Business Days: Direct deposits are faster than paper checks, but bank processing can still take time. Wait at least three business days after the scheduled date before assuming the payment is truly late.
  2. Check Your Status (New Claimants): If you are newly awarded SSDI, your first payment will follow the schedule above after your full accrual period (typically five full calendar months after the disability onset date). The SSA will notify you of your specific first payment date.
  3. Contact the SSA: If your payment is still missing after three business days, contact the Social Security Administration directly at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778). Note that if you have a pending review, appeal, or have had an overpayment/off-set, your payment may be delayed beyond the calendar.

FAQs

What day of the month are Social Security benefits paid in 2026?

The payment date depends on the benefit type and the recipient's circumstances:

SSI benefits: Paid on the 1st of the month (or the preceding business day).

SSDI/Retirement benefits (Post-May 1997): Paid on the second, third, or fourth Wednesday of the month, based on the recipient's birth date.

When will I get my first SSI payment with the COLA increase?

The increased SSI benefit for the month of January 2026 will be paid on Wednesday, December 31, 2025, because January 1st is a federal holiday. This is the first payment that will reflect the new 2.8% COLA.

Does this schedule apply if I am receiving SSDI and also a VA benefit or Workers' Comp?

The SSA payment schedule (by birth date) governs your SSDI payment. The VA and Workers' Compensation are separate programs. The VA has its own schedule. Workers' Comp may result in an offset (reduction) of your SSDI payment amount, but it does not change the day your SSDI check is issued.

How much can I earn on SSDI in 2026 before losing my benefits?

The earnings limit for non-blind SSDI recipients in 2026 is $1,690 per month. This is the Substantial Gainful Activity (SGA) limit. Earning more than this amount (net of impairment-related work expenses) generally indicates you are no longer medically disabled in the eyes of the SSA, leading to a loss of benefits.
