Apply for SSI Benefits

Brad Myler

Are you disabled and looking to apply for SSI benefits? Before you apply there are a number of steps you’ll need to follow, and a few things you’ll need to have. While the exact requirements may vary by situation, these are the main things that you will need:

  1. First you’ll need your Social Security card (or at the very least your SSN.)
  2. Proof of US Citizenship (or eligible non-citizen status.)
  3. A certified copy of your birth certificate to prove your age (other Government ID will also work.)
  4. Detailed information about your current residence (lease information, mortgage documents, contact info for the landlord or mortgage company, etc.)
  5. Detailed financial records that show your income and any other valuable assets (bank statements, pay checks, insurance policies, etc.)
  6. Account numbers for your checking account(s), savings account if you have one, as well as information about any loans or credits.
  7. Your personal medical records, particularly those that pertain to your current disability (the more detailed the records, the better, including physician contact information.)

However, if you don’t have or know how to get each of these things, there’s no need to worry. We will work with you to locate and get copies of the records you don’t have and that you’ll need for your application.

Once you have the documents and information you need, you can then apply for SSI benefits. When you apply for SSI, you have just a couple of options: you can apply by yourself (online, by mail or in person), or have someone help you with your application and/or apply on your behalf.

Because so very many applications are initially denied, you may find benefit from having a disability advocate firm such as Trajector Disability help you with the application process. Using an advocate isn’t required, but with the help of an advocate your chances of winning benefits improve significantly.

At Trajector Disability (formerly Myler Disability), we have extensive experience helping people to apply for SSI, and we can help you to collect the necessary information, complete your application, and even appeal your case if you qualify.

So, if you’re still not sure about how to apply for SSI, you can just fill out the short form on the right side of this page, or call the number at the top of this page to determine if you would be eligible to apply for SSI benefits.
