Chapter 2: What Disabilities Qualify?

It can be discouraging when society has a name for your disability but doesn’t appear to care about the daily challenges your disability brings. That said, before we show the impact of your disability, we need to identify it for the SSA. There are two classes of disability that may qualify you for Social Security disability benefits: mental disabilities; and physical disabilities – and within each class there are multiple disability categories that group similar impairments together.

Meeting the requirements for your specific disability listing within a category can be difficult. But this doesn’t mean you aren’t eligible for benefits. Let’s talk about the different categories and what you can do to strengthen your claim for benefits.
